Your questions answered

At Heather's HandUps, we believe in clear communication and transparency. Here, you'll find answers to the most important questions about how we operate, our consignment process, and our dedication to giving back to the community.

What are the most common questions people ask about shopping or consigning?

Customers often ask:

Where are you located?
We are located at 8975 Frisco St, in Birch Tree MO. We are across from MFA and next door to Market Street Grocery.

What kind of items do you accept?
We accept most types of items that you would find in any thrift store. Please contact us for specific items you may have questions about.

How do you know when a particular consignor's item sells?
Each consignor has a unique number. That number, along with the consignment date, are stamped on the price tag when the item is placed on the floor for sale. Each consignor is entered, at the register, when sold. The register sales report will break down the totals for every consignor sold during a specific date range.

What about lost tags?
We do our absolute best to match an item to a tag found. First, a search of the items next to where the tag was found is performed. If unsuccessful, the tag is kept by the register in the event that someone has an item they want to purchase without a tag. Third, there is a consignor number assigned just for lost tags. This way, if an item is sold without a tag, it can be tracked in the event that a 'lost tag' shows up. In most cases, this will keep the lost tag issue to a minimum. Heather's HandUps is not liable for theft or loss through no fault of the company or it's representatives.

Can I get my items back if they don't sell?
We are not a boutique or a consigner of high valued goods that includes a promise of return. With our business model, we take in high volume goods and are basically a profit sharing thrift store. Instead of donating all of your unneeded things as a 'giveaway', we offer to split the sale price with you. We have high respect for donations given to all charities. We also understand that there are some things that people wish they could get some money back out of. Nobody should be expected to donate everything for free. We accept donations and are grateful! We also like to show our appreciation to those who support us by giving back. Do you have too many clothes, dishes, wall pictures, household goods, etc? Some may say, "I know I'll never get out of it what I bought it for, but it would be nice to get something!" WE ARE YOUR PLACE!

What should people bringing items to consign understand about the process?

The best rule of thumb is to only bring in items for consignment that you will not miss. If you have a value attached to them and expect a certain amount for them, they are not suitable for this type of consignment store. There may be an exception here and there for high end items that would need to be addressed situation by situation, but as a general rule we avoid this type of consignment for liability reasons. Items brought in for consignment are priced to sell. If they don't sell, they get donated. This is a great way to get some money back on nice items that you don't need. While most thrift stores operate on donations, we are basically a profit-sharing thrift store. Think of it as a donation, with a 50% profit share of the sale price with the donor. Items are labeled with a consignor number. They are rung up, in the register upon sale, with this consignor number as the department number. This way when the item sells we know who gets their 50%. We do not have the capability of tracking every item, individually, in inventory. We can tell you, at the end of the month, how many items sold and for what price and the total. We don't have the capability of telling you which item it was and which ones are still in the store, or donated. A short explanation would be that once it is brought into the store to sell, it is the property of Heather's HandUps, with the agreement of a 50% payout of the sale price for anything accepted to sell. The rest is donated.

PLEASE do not bring in broken or otherwise unusable items. We are a Hand Up. We do not donate garbage to the community. Please take your own garbage out. And thank you so much for considering Heather's HandUps!!

How does Heather's HandUps help the community?

Heather's HandUps donates 10% of all sales in store credit vouchers to the local Community Action Agency for people in need. Heather's HandUps also donates items, in acceptable condition (whether unsold after the consignment period or not accepted as a consignment item) to various places throughout the community. Some examples are nursing homes, daycares, schools, senior centers, etc...

What should people know about donating items?

We gratefully accept donated items. These items help us keep our doors open, support local community-based charities, and provide affordable goods to our customers. All donated items are processed with the same care and consideration as our consigned items, and those not sold will be given to local organizations.
